How to Build a Commander Deck on a Budget

Commander is one of the most popular formats in Magic: The Gathering, but it has a reputation for being expensive. The good news? You don't need to spend hundreds of dollars to build a deck that's fun, competitive, and capable of winning games. Here's how to do it the right way.

Start With a Clear Game Plan

The biggest mistake budget builders make is trying to do too many things at once. Pick one strategy and commit to it. Whether that's going wide with tokens, ramping into big creatures, or assembling a two-card combo, a focused deck will outperform a scattered one at almost every budget level.

Your commander should be the engine of your strategy, not just a cool card. Ask yourself: does this commander help me execute my game plan every single game? If the answer is yes, you're on the right track.

Prioritize Consistency Over Power

In a 100-card singleton format, consistency is everything. Budget or not, you want to draw into your key pieces reliably. That means investing in card draw and tutors before anything else.

Some of the best budget card draw spells in Commander include Rhystic Study, Phyrexian Arena, and Harmonize. For tutors, Diabolic Tutor and Fabricate are affordable options that can find your win conditions reliably.

Build a Solid Mana Base

Mana bases are where most budget decks fall apart. Shock lands and fetch lands are powerful but expensive. The good news is that budget alternatives exist and work well in Commander, where the pace of the game is slower than other formats.

Focus on lands that enter untapped. Pathway lands, check lands (like Dragonskull Summit), and the Battlebond lands (like Luxury Suite) are all affordable and effective. Avoid tap lands whenever possible since entering tapped costs you a full turn of development.

Use Efficient Interaction

You don't need the most expensive counterspells or removal to interact effectively. Counterspell itself is cheap. Swords to Plowshares and Path to Exile are affordable white removal spells that punch well above their price tag. Beast Within is a green staple that handles almost any permanent for just a few dollars.

Aim for at least 8 to 10 pieces of interaction in your deck. This keeps you relevant in the game even when your main strategy gets disrupted.

Find Your Win Conditions Early

Budget decks often win through synergy rather than raw power. Look for two or three cards that work together to create an overwhelming advantage. These don't have to be infinite combos. Sometimes a commander that doubles your tokens combined with a board-wide pump spell is enough to close out a game.

Once you know your win conditions, build backwards. Every card in your deck should either help you find those pieces, protect them, or buy you time to assemble them.

Know When to Upgrade

A budget deck is a starting point, not a ceiling. As you play more games, you'll learn which cards underperform and which slots you want to upgrade. Prioritize upgrades that improve consistency first, then power level.
